The Golden Compass by Phillip Pullman

Finished “The Golden Compass” by Phillip Pullman on the plane Thursday night.
I found the daemons fascinating. I find the belief in souls from culture to culture to be extremely interesting, and thoroughly enjoyed Pullman’s idea of how the soul can be manifested externally in the form of an animal. While it was a very small mention in the book, it was explained that while rare some people had same sex daemons. I may be reading into the passage too much, but I felt like this was a nice nod towards the nature theory for homosexuality.
I was so glad that I decided to go ahead and get the remaining two books before I finished because when I finished mid-flight, I was able to start on “The Subtle Knife” and I’m hoping to have the entire trilogy finished by this weekend. This series is definitely giving me the “and then what happens??” feeling while I’m reading.
“The Golden Compass” gets a B.

So I am really enjoying “The Golden Compass”. Last night the Boo had to talk me into putting it down so we could finally watch Mad Men together from Sunday.

The one thing that keeps distracting me while I’m reading though, is the daemons. Not that I find them distracting as characters, I keep derailing myself by trying to figure out what type of daemon I would have. It would probably be a monkey, or some sort of wildcat.

I’ve seriously been putting a lot of thought into it.

Finished “The Leopard” by Jo Nesbo on Friday night. I liked it, but not as much as I enjoyed “The Snowman”. I’m still not entirely sure why this one was called “The Leopard”. This book was a lot more violent than the previous novel, and I thought that Nesbo was pretty creative in how he dispatched some of the victims. I have to give Nesbo credit for that, in both novels he did an excellent job of writing some of the scenes in such a way that you weren’t really sure who was speaking which was a bit frustrating but all was revealed later.
If you enjoy the Saw movies, I think you’ll like “The Leopard”. There were quiet a few graphic scenes involved, including a detailed how-to in regards to dislocating your jaw with a nail head.
I’d give this one a B.
Started reading “The Golden Compass” I’m about 20% of the way into it, quiet the slow starting book but I’m intrigued. I really don’t remember much from the movie, so I’m curious to see how it all plays out. I keep picturing Lord Asriel as Daniel Craig but I just can’t picture Nicole Kidman as Mrs. Coulter.

The 50 Book Challenge is helping me get to several books that I’ve been meaning to read and never got to.
Bought “The Golden Compass” by Phillip Pullman this morning. I’m not sure if I’m going to love it so I decided to just get the first book, instead of the bundled trilogy. I saw the movie, and it didn’t wow me. But neither did the Narnia movies, and I loved those books when I was in middle school so I figured I should give this a shot.
I should be able to finish “The Leopard” after this weekend (it’s so good already!) and if I finish “The Golden Compass” I’m looking at 5 books read for March. Fingers crossed. Usually when I make a game plan like this something comes up that prevents me from completing my goal.
