Finished “Fight Club” by Chuck Palahniuk on the ride home last night. The Boo has been asking me to read this for awhile, because it’s one of his favorite reads. I enjoy Chuck’s writing usually, although some I find a bit too much for me to handle, definitely had to quit reading “Pygmy” because it disturbed me too much. But I really enjoyed “Fight Club”, and I wish that I could have read this before I knew about the ending due to the popularity of the movie. But I’d like to think that I would have been surprised by it still, and wouldn’t have been picking up on the subtle hints throughout the story.
While I don’t think this will replace “Invisible Monsters” as my favorite Palahniuk read so far, this is definitely in the top 4.
I give this a B+.

Finished “Damned” by Chuck Palahniuk this afternoon. It was an interesting read, and I liked it, but I’m having a hard time quantifying how much. I was intrigued with the writing style, and felt compelled to hurry up so I could get to his trademark twist. The descriptions of hell and how you get there made me laugh and/or cringe (especially because I’ve broken a few rules to be damned), but I didn’t love it. I think it’s mostly because his books always leave me with this weird unsettled feeling after I put it down, which is probably why I also enjoy them.
But it was really nice to read a book that the Boo has so we can discuss it. Our book tastes don’t intersect too often, and it’s fun when it does.
Started “Zombie Spaceship Wasteland” by Patton Oswalt since I still had the Boo’s kindle.  I definitely wouldn’t have picked this out on my own, but it is a very unique collection of essays. I’m about half way through, and I’ve read an epic poem about Oswalt’s high school D&D character. And I’m not saying epic as in super awesome, I mean epic as in the narrative poem. He’s quite talented.

I feel the same way. I wish I could tell her “I got it, Madison!” lol. I love Palahniuk’s books in general. Have you ever read Pygmy?

I started “Pygmy” but I just couldn’t get into it.

I’ve only finished ”Choke”, “Snuff”, and “Invisible Monsters”, but thoroughly enjoyed those novels.  I enjoy the gritty, semi-erotic style of his writing. Although I was embarrassed to be reading “Snuff” on the subway since the endpapers were small images of figures mid-coitus.

If you’re a fan of Palahniuk’s I would recommend, “Lord Vishnu’s Love Handles” by Will Clarke if you get a chance. It’s weird, quirky, kinda sexy and entertaining.

How are you liking Damned? I’m also reading it!

I find Madison constantly reassuring the reader that even though she’s only 13 that she’s not an idiot rather annoying. But I’m really enjoying the hell that Palahniuk built, and for the most part I’m enjoying the story and Madison’s character.

How are you enjoying it?
