Day 6: Favorite book cover

Terrible question. That’s like asking me to pick a favorite ice cream flavor. It just can’t be done.

I just like book covers that call out from the shelves and grab your attention. Whether it’s because they have nifty artwork or fun fonts, or something else entirely, I love buying books based on fun covers that I haven’t heard too much about.

Day 4: A character that you would want as a best friend

I would want the Bradshaw’s from the Thursday Next series as couple friends. They just seem like lovely people to sit down and chit chat with over dinner.  Plus, she’s an anthropomorphic gorilla. I’d be fulfilling all childhood fantasies of getting to be best friends with a primate.

Day 3: Favorite Book Turned TV or Movie

I honestly don’t think I have an answer to this. I rarely see any books that have been given a fantastic visual representation. Although, I am looking forward to The Great Gatsby as a film, but I was never that big a fan of the book.

Day 2: A book you can read again and again

As I discovered last year, the HP books are incredibly rereadable, something I knew as a teen when they were first out, but it was nice to feel that way as an adult. But I feel like most everyone on Tumblr feels that way; -)

I try to reread “The Master and Margarita” by Mikhail Bulgakov and “Wuthering Heights” by Emily Bronte every few years. Both of which are due for a reread sometime this year. “Wuthering Heights” I just love how dark it is. But with “The Master and Margarita” it seems to mean more to me on the rereads, I “see” more, and as I’m gotten older the themes and underlying statements about society just make more sense.

Day 1: Favorite or most unique book setting

Hmm, I’m drawing a blank on most unique book setting. There are definitely some nifty worlds that I would like to visit, but as for my favorite setting, I’d have to say probably the Book World from the Thursday Next series. If those tours existed I would definitely be saving up to go for a crazy tour of the more imaginative magical worlds in literature. Examples being His Dark Materials worlds, Harry Potter, Narnia, Oz, Liliput, Wonderland, etc.

Day 2 - What’s the title of your story? Why did you choose the name you did?

I decided on the working title being “The Afterthoughts”. I’m aiming to have a short story collection about the people who get left behind after their partner has found true love. I think I’m going to bounce between creating some scenarios, and maybe having some fun with some already existing fictional couples.
We’ll see how it goes.

Day 1 - Have you participated in NaNoWriMo before? If so, which years and what end result?

Yuppers, NaNo 2011 and Camp Nano August 2012. Last year, I think I got to 36K and this past August I got to 42K. I’m feeling good that I’ll finally cross the 50K marker this time around. Third time’s the charm right?

I really enjoy participating in Nano, because I love the added pressure of only having a month. It keeps me motivated and if I don’t continue on with a story, I don’t feel guilty and like having it in my “creative scrap pile”.

Day 30 - Share a link to either your NaNo profile or a location on the internet where your story can be found. If someone offered to beta read for you, would you be willing to do the same for them during the subsequent editing process?

If anyone wants to check out my camper stats, here’s the link.

I’ll probably be posting a snap shot of the graph or my word count almost every day.

I don’t think I’ll be asking anyone to be my reading guinea pig just yet. I’d like to just get through August, print everything out, and then read through it all at least once before I let someone else see it. In an effort to not edit myself during this challenge, I’ll be using my patented awkward in-line note writing, and no one else needs to subject themselves to attempting to decode that.

I’m really excited about this Nano challenge and can’t believe that it starts tomorrow. I feel like I’ve been thinking about the Hopper family for so long, and I’m ready to finally sit down with OmmWriter and knock this challenge out of the park. I’m curious to see how long this feeling will last; -)

Day 29 - Name one thing in which you may indulge as a treat to keep yourself motivated and writing that you wouldn’t otherwise have done.

Well, I’ll probably be drinking a little bit more. Having a nice glass of red wine (malbec or merlot, I’m not too picky) usually helps drop a little bit of my inhibition and allows me to not over think what I’m about to write. I don’t see myself drinking on a regular basis, but on a weekend day when I’d like to just sit down and power through several hours of writing to help get ahead or catch up I can see a nice glass being helpful.

Day 27 - How much are your characters inspired by real life people?

Most of my central characters have a real-life counterpart, but most of their personalities and conflict with one another are fictionalized.

Even though I’ve given the Hopper family a similar set-up to my own, (father, mother, older daughter, younger son), I don’t want to make them too similar. What I enjoy about writing fiction, is taking a kernel of truth from my own experience, and then creating something entirely different from it.

Hopefully if I do manage to complete this story after all the rewrites and get published, the Hopper’s will be so different no one from my family will even recognize that they were the starting canvas for my characters.
